Starting An Online Business: Now Is The Perfect Time
If you’re looking to make money from home in order to make ends meet or replace lost income during the economic downturn, starting an online business is a great way of doing this. Some people are afraid of the idea of starting an online business, though, because they don’t really know where to begin.
The first thing you need to do when starting an online business is to decide if you want to create your own business from scratch or work with an existing business model that may already have channels in place for promotion and distribution. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Starting an online business by yourself, like building a blog, starting a search engine optimization consultancy or adding e-commerce capabilities to your brick and mortar business, is a good option for some people because it allows them to exert more control and to create a custom website that dazzles.
These types of businesses will require custom-built websites. If you can do it yourself, great; if not, you’ll have to get someone to do it for you. This doesn’t have to be expensive because there are web hosts out there who will do it for you for a couple of hundred dollars. This is one of the primary criteria for picking a hosting company, the others being what e-mail capabilities they offer you and how infrequent their downtime is.
On the other hand, if the idea of starting an online business from scratch gives you hives because you don’t have the time or the knowledge necessary-for example, if you have no idea what a web host is, this probably refers to you-you may be better off working with an existing business. This can be accomplished in several ways; three of the most common are affiliate marketing, franchises and direct sales.
Affiliate marketing means you promote another website’s products or services in exchange for a commission on any sales you make. This is a common online business model, meaning there are hundreds of options out there. If you choose this method for starting an online business make sure to investigate the company thoroughly before investing because unfortunately, scams do exist.
A franchise is a brand name business you purchase; some of your profits go back to the parent company in exchange for the familiarity of the brand name and helping you promote the business. An example of an online franchise might be a gift basket business. Direct sales means you’re selling for a company that doesn’t operate out of stores; Avon, Mary Kay and the Fuller Brush Company are all well-known examples of direct sales companies.
An affiliate marketing program, direct sales program or franchise will make the process of starting an online business quicker and provide you with a blueprint for marketing it. However, there are lots of competitors in these arenas so you may find yourself in a very crowded market. The advantages and disadvantages to starting an online business of any of these types depends more on your preferences than on external factors.
